Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag

5 Rules to Spring Clean Your Makeup

Spring is here and it’s a natural time to de-clutter, de-stress and detox. You’ve got plans to clean out the house, or maybe do a juice cleanse, and now the perfect time to do the same with your makeup bag.

You take care of what goes in your body and what goes on your skin (because what goes on, goes in!), so it only makes sense to take care of the products you’re using too.  Here’s our 5 rules to spring clean your makeup bag the natural way.

1. When in doubt, throw it out!

It may sound crazy, but it’s one of the most common questions I’m asked. Yes, makeup does actually have an expiry date, sometimes we don’t see it because there are no regulations forcing brands to put an expiration date on their products in Australia.  Mascara, foundation and concealer all have about a 4-12 month expiration.

TIP: Can’t remember when you opened a product? Try writing the month you bought it in with a magic marker on the product so you can keep track, and if you’re in doubt or the texture of the product has started to change, throw it out!

2. Less is more

Revamp and simplify your makeup routine at the same time. When replacing old products look for multi-purpose products like a Lip to Cheek Tint, Tinted Moisturiser or pot rouge that can double as an eye shadow, not only will you reduce the load of products you’re putting on your skin, you’ll also save money and free up some space in your makeup bag.

TIP: Some Lip Nourish shades double perfectly as the most dewy and natural feeling cheek tint! Try Pink Juniper or and dash of Ruby Grapefruit next time you’re heading out and about.

spring clean your makeup bag

 3. Rethink Your Lip Colour

Sometimes it only takes a new lip colour to totally change your look and improve your makeup bag.  Springtime is perfect for trying something with a subtle shimmer or with a peachy, pink or coral tones. And remember that less is more rule?

TIP: Lip Nourish not only doubles as a lip balm, you can layer shades to create a whole new look! Try Cranberry Citrus over Tea Rose or finish Mandarin Spice off with a lick of Peach Melon for the ‘IT’ Spring combo.

4. Keep it clean

Makeup brushes and sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria from old makeup, oils on your skin, dirt from your bathroom counter, sweat….just think about everything that goes on them!

TIP: Use a natural soap (I sometimes use my organic shampoo and or make my own brush cleanser with lemon, lavender oil and bergamot oil) to wash them and let them air dry completely on a towel before using them again. Try to wash your brushes, sponges and even your actual makeup bag about once a week, or once every two weeks to keep them clean and bacteria free.

5. Go natural

Spring is the perfect time to make the change and stop feeding your skin with toxins and chemicals like parabens, mineral oil, formaldehyde etc and starting nourishing it with fruit and vegetable pigmented makeup rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Not only is natural makeup better for your skin, it’s better for your health and better for the environment.

TIP: As you run out or throw out one product, simply replace with a natural alternative. Think of it like a skin detox!

Need a little help or advice? email me and I’d be more than happy to help you to spring clean your makeup bag the most natural, inexpensive and stylish way possible.

Natural Beauty Traveller

Top 5 Glowing Skin Essentials for Travelling

It’s that time of the year when many of us are travelling to a warmer climate. We know too well the damage long haul flights can do to our bodies inside and out. Aside from lack of sleep and minimal movement, dry cabin air and altitude will put strain on the skin, regardless if you are flying first or not. Common symptoms include parched skin, puffy eyes, irritation and an overall feeling of dullness. Not the ideal way to start a holiday!

Touch down at your destination feeling fresh and ready for adventure with these glow-enhancing products and skin-salving tips.

WotNot Makeup Remover Wipes

First thing’s first – it is important to remove all makeup as soon as you board the plane to avoid clogged pores and skin breakouts. Makeup wipes are essential for a quick hassle free way to deeply cleanse skin for the flight ahead.

Removing any make-up will also reduce the risk of any other skin irritation that might back fire on your delicate dermal layers. WotNot’s gentle remover wipes will slough away dirt and grime, thanks to a nourishing formula that’s enriched with all-natural ingredients including Australian certified organic aloe vera to lubricate and repair, organic sweet almond and rosehip oil to restore lost moisture and calm itch and inflammation as well as regenerate skin and rebalance moisture.

Quick Tip: Skin may tend to over compensate when it is in a state of dehydration, leading to oily skin, just another reason to ensure you keep hydrating make up wipes close by to wipe away any residue.

Travel Beauty Tip

Trefiel Moisturising Mask

Dry air and humidity has a way of zapping the moisture out of our skin, leaving it drier than the Sahara Desert not to mention lacklustre. Slipping on a thirst-quenching face mask may just be the TLC your complexion has been craving – and it’s the perfect way to relax while in transit.

Our go-to is plant-based Trefiel Moisturing Face Mask, the perfect hydration quick fix your skin is craving. Leave on for 30 minutes, remove, and say hello to unstoppable radiance. This relaxing hydro mask offers intense hydration and minimises fine lines and wrinkles to soothe and leave skin glowing by the time you step off the plane.

Quick Tip: Double up with a couple of layers of Lip Nourish for an added lip mask bonus.

Beauty Travel Kit

The Divine Company Mini Travel Kit

As altitude increases, blood flow to the skin decreases, which makes for a dull appearance. The obvious solution is to layer up with plenty of skincare essentials but TSA standards mean you can’t sadly pack all of your grooming faves.

The Divine Company Mini Travel Kit solves this issue in a flash, thanks to perfect skincare miniatures, catered to provide enough goodness to enrich the skin for up to one week after use. The miniature series includes a hydrating cream cleanser, the Daily renewal lactic gel cleanser, Soothing Rose Toner which prepares the skin for maximum moisture retention, and finally, the Illuminating Day Cream which deeply moisturises the epidermis resulting in a dewy, youthful complexion. They’re perfect to lug around with you while you vacation too!

Quick Tip: If your favourite beauty products are not offered in travel-friendly varieties, then transfer liquids into mini travel containers.

Luk Beautifood Lip Nourish

Dry lips are never fun to deal with, especially when you are 13 hours and several time zones away from reaching your make-up bag. But rather than whack on a lip balm filled with toxins that cause lips to flake, or worse – a dehydrating lipstick – Lip Nourish will nourish and hydrate for hours on end.

Harnessing the goodness of active foods, the pigmented and neutral shades are perfect for colour touch up’s and a hit of hydration before, during and after your flight.

Quick Tip: Ensure to reapply Lip Nourish every couple of hours to safeguard your lips.Lipstick Shades

Drink herbal tea and still water (avoid alcohol)

Remember to keep up with fluid intake and avoid salty airplane food that causes water retention and shows up as facial puffiness and bloating. As much as jet setting calls for celebration, swapping alcohol for herbal tea or still water, will assist with blood circulation and warding away dry, flaky skin.

Quick Tip: Once you land, try and get a bit of exercise in, even if it’s just a brisk walk to mobilise extra fluid.

Bon voyage and happy travels

Renata Vosylienne beauty bag

Whats in your beauty bag – Renata Vosyliene of Green Life in Dublin

Hi, my name is Renata Vosyliene, and I am the person behind Green Life In Dublin blog. I am the only blogger in Ireland who pays attention to the product’s ingredients and what they are doing to you! I am doing my best to source, test and review green beauty products, despite having no brick and mortar shops like Detox Market, Credo or even Wholefoods here, where I could go in and browse goodies to my heart content. Take my hand and we will navigate green beauty world together, take a look at my blog (links below) to find lots of reviews, I will tell you what works, what’s not and where to get it. So let’s take a look at my make up bag, shall we?

Hynt Concealer In Light

My holy grail concealer, green beauty or no green beauty! The pigmentation is out of this world, and if you haven’t tried it, I highly suggest you do. You can thank me later 🙂

link to my blog post: greenlifeindublin.blogspot.ie/2016/05/hynt-beauty-duet-perfecting-concealer.html

  • Inika Peachy Keen Blush – Gorgeous peachy blush with golden shimmer, one of my fave products, I just adore it. It is one of the Nars Orgasm dupes, and I have dedicated the whole blog post listing not one or two, but nearly TWENTY green dupes for it! I am really pleased natural beauty world is exploading and there are lots of brands and products for us to choose from. It was a whole different story when I was switching about eight or so years ago.
  • Inika Highlighter – Great highlighter that will stay on all day, I just love it.
  • Zuii Organic Melon blush – My first purchase from Zuii Organic, and I really love it. it is also included in Nars Orgasm Dupes post, this is also beautiful, but a bit muted version of Inika’s Peachy Keen. If you find Peachy Keen glow a bit too much, you would love this.
  • Nude By Nature Rose Natural Illusion Trio – I also have Coral, but I tend to carry this trio as it gives you more options. I have a review post on this brand too, so if you want to see swatches or read my two cents on the products, please check out my blog.
  • Pure Anada Mineral Foundation In Atlantic Bisque – This is my Holy Grail mineral powder, and I think my quest to find the best foundation is over (when it comes to powder products). I love this brand in general. The pigmentation is great, all I need is one layer to get the desired full coverage, no need to buff seven layers of minerals like I used to do with other brands- I need to hide dermatitis scars, hence the need for full coverage.
  • Pure Anada Brow Powder In Cinder – Again, lovely product from this Canadian company. I find all products from them really pigmented, and I really love the ashy tone of this brow powder, which is surprisingly hard to find in a natural beauty world. All the companies seem to think women need warm toned products when it comes to brows. No, I need ashy one, almost grey! There, I said it 🙂
  • Jo Browne Stick Perfume – Really lovely stick perfume from an Irish company – I have and really enjoy several of them. Longevity is great, and I also really love that they don’t lose their scent after a month or two – that happens a lot with other natural perfumes I’ve tried to date. I have a review on them too, please go to my blog and search “Jo Browne”. I’ll skip the link before it becomes a shameless self promotion 🙂
  • AnnMarie Gianni Neroli Mist – I always have some mist or the other on me, and I am testing this one from a really natural brand I’ve been wanting to try for ages.
  • Nude by Nature Touch of Glow Highlight Stick in Bronze – At first I was really scared of it, as I got it when I was at my winter palest (we are now coming into summer here in Ireland) but I find myself using more and more of it, I use it as multi stick, as the shimmery bronzer, as a cream eye shadow, and on my lips as a lipstick topper too. Love it.
  • Nude By Nature Mascara – Can you tell I love this brand, lol? This mascara will forever be a repurchase for me, and for one simple reason – it does not flake! It won’t give you dramatic false lash effect lashes, more like a natural look lashes, but as it is the only natural mascara I found not to flake – flaking is a pet peeve of mine.
  • 100% Maracuja Oil Mascara – Another love of mine, this has really great clean ingredients, and it smells like blueberries or chocolate, depending if you will get black or brown one. Lasts for ages, gives you length and volume, and it is also gluten free. I don’t know why I carry two mascaras or two almost identical blushes, it is just a way I am. Insert blushing emoji here! I am the same way with clothes for example, if I really like something, I get a back up.

If you want to know where I got everything you see here, please visit my blog, I always state it. Oh, and I always carry a lip balm and some gloss with me too.

  • Luk – A stunning lipstick which is 100% natural. I have a few of these lipsticks in a variety of shades – all of which stay on all day and are extremely moisturising to the lips.
  • World Organics Creme Blush – This is one of my favourite products. This creme blush is ultra-smooth and has peachy-pink undertones. It’s natural and is easily applied to the cheeks. It’s made with pressed oils and nourishing extracts. It’s almost 100% organic (although not quite). LOVE this product!

  • Nude by Nature: Natural Illusion Eyeshadow Trio in Rose – This eyeshadow is my new obsession, and not just because of the rose gold packaging The colour palette is perfect for wearing in the day and night, as the tones can be used to create a soft feminine light touch for the day, or deepen for a rich smoky rose colour eye for the night.
  • Revlon: Youth FX Fill + Blur Foundation in Neutral Beige – This foundation will be available to the public very soon and I must say they won’t be disappointed. It’s very lightweight on the skin and super hydrating. I love it, as it fills in any fine lines and wrinkles I have, but also provides a colour correcting pigment which helps cover any red or dark spots and looks great in selfies.
  • Australis: Black Eyeliner Pencil – I really hope Australis never stop creating this magic eyeliner, as I have been using it now for at least 10 years. The formula has never changed (as far as I know)n and has been a favourite for makeup artists for many years also. So obsessed with this eyeliner, I have actually never ever tried any other product. Why would you, when you already have the perfect one – right? It glides on, stays on and is easy to blend depending on your look.
  • Laura Geller: DramaLash Maximum Volumizing Mascara – I don’t wear Mascara that often, mostly due to me having long thick black lashes (sorry to gloat). But when I do, I love the dramatic volumizing mascara by Laura Geller. This product is fairly new to the Geller collection, and I started using it last year when it became available. I do have a few mixed brands of mascara, however, I always tend to grab this one more than any other of my mascaras. It’s full of vitamin B% too, so doesn’t try your lashes.
  • Endota Spa: Complete Coverage Concealer – Like my mascara, I have 3 favourite concealers and again I always seem to grab this one more regularly than the others. Unlike other concealers, which I feel can either be too oily on your skin, or too cakey – this concealer has the texture of a powder foundation, except with optimal coverage – which is great for those days when I feel like my skin is my worst enemy.
  • Lük Beautifood: Cranberry Citrus Lip Nourish Lipstick – WOW! Just WOW. This is my newest obsession when it comes to lipstick. With an ingredient base which can be pretty much eaten, this lipstick didn’t last very long on my lips. And not because it doesn’t have staying power, it does. It tasted so good, I keep licking my lips Good thing the ingredients are safe for me to eat. This shade is a rusty red, which is my favourite type of red lipstick. As it’s also filled with delicious nourishing ingredients like avocado oil and cocoa butter it also works a hydrating lip balm. So no caking lips whatsoever.
  • L’Occitane: Almond Delicious Hand Cream – Who doesn’t love L’Occitane, especially when it comes to their travel sized products which you can take anywhere. In general, I always have very dry skin; particularly my hands. So, I am very fussy when it comes to hand products, as they don’t always work (or last that long). This hand cream fits into my beauty bag easily and thanks to the nourishing almond milk ingredient, keeps my hands super soft until I next wash them.

Raising a Natural Beauty Best Natural Beauty Advice

Raising a Natural Beauty: Advice from our mums and grandmothers

Over time, we often draw pearls of wisdom handed to us by our mothers and grandmothers (even if we didn’t always accept the advice at the time!) from family recipes to relationship wisdom and more. It’s true – mum knows best.

And if there’s one thing that mothers are truly well versed in, it’s natural beauty tips, given that things were a lot less complicated 50 years ago. To celebrate Mother’s Day (which is Sunday May 14th – don’t forget!), we asked our amazing Natural Beauty community to divulge their mother’s best-kept beauty secrets passed down from generation to generation.

My mum nurtured my simple approach to beauty leading by example.  Growing up in the country we had limited resources so Mum always used what she had at hand. I’ve continued to keep it simple and clean by seeking inspiration from my kitchen and garden.

So, apart from passing on her great skin genes, Mum’s advice of keeping it simple has helped me create this incredible community around harnessing the beauty of food and to nurture my own children’s natural beauty” – Cindy Luken

“Less is always more, unless it’s a sunscreen!” – Renata, @green_life_in_dublin

“Mum always told me to stay out of the sun and drink water to have glowing skin. It’s something I will pass on to my future kids even though I don’t always listen but it’s great advice and makes a difference to the ageing process.” – Zeri, www.insincerelyher.com

“My mama always told me “just try and look like YOU.” and she taught me the importance of a good quality moisturiser! My grandmother always taught her granddaughters “never leave the house without eyeshadow and a pair of earrings on” I guess their overall message was to get up, be yourself and show up for everyday. – Brig, @create.love.heal

“My mother would always encourage me to play with the food in our kitchen for my basic skin care needs. I remember walking into the bathroom and seeing her apply all sorts of face masks – egg, sesame oil and who knows what else. She would spend hours reading about the benefits that these simple ingredients would have on her skin. One day, I finally decided to join her and we made an egg yolk mask. I remember thinking that my face would smell or it would be so weird but after washing it off, I was shocked to find that my skin was softer and more plump…and all we used was one little egg yolk! I’ll admit, I didn’t use an egg yolk mask again but it did show me that beauty products don’t need to be complicated or expensive or full of chemicals to work wonders!” – Andra, www.andramariawellness.com

“Mum used to say that the best natural beauty treatments you can get is sufficient sleep and a good moisturiser!” – Anna, @annalovesorganicbeauty

“My mum showered me with unconditional love and compliments from as early as I can remember.  She is totally biased in thinking (and promoting) that I am the most beautiful girl in the world! To this day, I walk with my head held high and feel beautiful with a deeper knowledge that I am loved. My mum showed me that as long as you FEEL beautiful, you will be beautiful!  The most beautiful thing about her would have to be her infectiously vibrant, upbeat and positive attitude and outlook on life. It’s inspiring how bright her light shines.” Emmily Banks, Depths of Beauty

“Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise. My grandma has beautiful soft skin and this is the one tip she always drilled into me. Oh and of course eat a healthy whole foods diet to nourish the insides and outsides, because this is the only body you will get!” – Shelley, www.shelleysgoodeats.com

Mother's Day Natural Beauty Advice

“My great-grandmother taught me about the benefits of bathing in milk! Whenever I get a chance I’ll run a bath and add a cup of milk. It’s so moisturising for the skin, contains no nasties, and I come out of the bath feeling super soft!” – Teagan, www.twokidsraisingkids.com

“Less is more and you need to let your skin breathe – not cover it in toxic chemicals!” – Kelsey, www.libertygreen.com.au

“I would have to say that the one piece of skin care advice that my mother gave me that’s stuck with me would be that I should never go to bed angry, or with makeup on. Two things that are definitely good to keep in mind!” – Leah, @temporaryprincess

“If you’re looking to achieve moisturising nails, look to soak them into a bowl of olive oil for about a few minutes. You’ll see how incredibly nourishing it will leave your nails feeling!” – Livia, www.livia.com.au

“My mom was never big into beauty products but she always modelled how to be kind with words and actions – and that is true beauty. But guess what, now she is 63 and I send her green beauty for Mother’s Day and her birthday and she can’t get enough! #actionsspeaklouderthanwords” – Lisa, @thisorganicgirl

“Drink lots of water! Outer beauty starts on the inside with proper nutrition and hydration. Drinking water will keep your skin looking healthy and young. Now that I’m sneaking closer to 3-0, I know this to be true!” – Jordan, @sixelementblog

5 Top Natural Beauty Tips for Autumn

Top 5 Natural Beauty Tips for Autumn

The temperatures become cooler, the days are shorter, the morning air is crisp and it’s time to start thinking about woolly jumpers and hats. Autumn is officially here, bringing with it a harvest of yummy foods and exciting Autumn beauty trends. But after months of sun, sand and sea exposure, Autumn also summons the need for some serious TLC.

Our 5 top Autumn beauty skin, hair and health tips will keep you in glowing condition top to toe through the change in seasons with a range of post-summer beauty rituals, natural foods and remedies to prepare your skin from the inside out and outside in.

1. Exfoliate often!

Autumn is the perfect time to focus on repairing and caring for your skin and health, especially if you’ve spent time at the beach in previous months. To save your skin from becoming dull, lacklustre and dehydrated during the colder months, up your exfoliation to twice a week. The exfoliation process increases cell turnover rate and promotes more radiant skin by removing dead skin cells that can prevent the absorption of any moisturisers or serums.

For the body, we recommend Dry Body Brushing regularly, which works to invigorate your lymphatic system and rid the skin of lumps and bumps. By starting to ‘dry brush’ you’ll not only exfoliate and boost your circulation and refine your skin tone, but also create more energy in the body and a feeling of general wellbeing. Check out this handy tutorial on how to dry body brush the skin.

When it comes to the face, try one of our favourite at-home pantry beauty recipes – Honey & Oats Deep Cleansing Mask, which is extremely cleansing, healing and softening to the skin, not to mention smells and tastes delicious! You’ll have a youthful glow this season in no time.

2. Swap coffee and sugary drinks for herbal tea

As tricky as it is to give up your morning coffee, herbal tea will do all kinds of wonder this Autumn, especially when it comes to your skin. Caffeine in coffee and some caffeine rich teas dehydrates the skin, which can ultimately leads to ageing and a dull skin tone.

Similarly, the high level of sugar in drinks like hot chocolate and lemonade can also be damaging to your skin, causing blemishes and break outs. In older women, sugar consumption can lead to the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), proteins that become glycated causing skin ageing, wrinkles and lines, so avoid as best as possible.

For the perfect substitute try this warming Chai Tea recipe, which is packed with antioxidants including vitamin C, vitamin A, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron and theobromine, the kinds of chai spices that prevent free radical damage that can lead to premature ageing. There isn’t anything better than a warm cup of herbal tea to ward away cold weather blues, don’t you think?

3. Increase hydration

As the season changes and the temperature plummets, it’s important to keep hydration at the top of your skincare regime. The skin repairs itself at night, and during this process, loses a huge proportion of its moisture. Throw heating into the mix, and we have ourselves a recipe for extreme dehydration.

Aim to use skin-loving nutrient rich hydrating balms that encourage and contain vital ingredients like Vitamin C, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. You might also want to layer your balms with serums to supercharge the thirst-quenching benefits or pop on an overnight mask for radiant skin by morning.

If your complexion has lost its glow, try this DIY Banana and Avocado Face Mask to nourish, plump and boost radiance or if you’ve experienced sun damage from a long, hot summer, then give this DIY Mask for Summer Spots a whirl.

Always opt for products that do not contain pore blocking ingredients such as mineral oil, drying alcohol, fragrance and preservatives that prevent your skin from breathing naturally.

And don’t forget your hands – as the skin on your hands doesn’t produce as much natural oil as the rest of your body, it’s much more prone to dryness, especially in colder weather. Pamper your hands with a deeply hydrating rescue remedy enriched with natural ingredients like Jojoba oil and soothing Marshmallow root.

Likewise, sun and sea can leave hair dry and damaged. Use the cooler months to nurture it back to health with powerhouse ingredients like coconut oil and argan oil for gorgeous, softer-than-ever tresses that remain hydrated and healthy.

4. Use natural lip care

It’s no secret that the chill in the air can be taxing on the lips, drying them out and leaving them a little worse for wear. Luckily, there’s a few key ways to keep them in tip top shape this season.

Firstly, the number one rule for keeping lips luscious is to not lick them to moisten them. Saliva is full of enzymes designed to aid digestion, not hydrate lips, so stay mindful to avoid lip licking.

Next, minimise the amount of salty and spicy foods you’re consuming which can trigger inflammation.

Thirdly, avoid products containing synthetic flavours and fragrances. Although it’s tempting to reach for a tub of petroleum jelly to protect chapped lips from the chill, it’s not as helpful as you think. As a by-product from the oil industry, petroleum jelly is not compatible with our skin and applying on your lips is like wrapping your skin in cling film, preventing it from breathing and potentially making the area even more sore and chapped.

Give your lips an even better edge against the elements with a super hydrating and nourishing lip balm like our Lip Nourish, which is made with avocado and citrus oils and natural emollients to keep your lips soft, smooth, hydrated and protected. For everyday wear, try Nude Cinnamon or Chai Shimmer, or even our best-selling Rose Lime. The unique melting texture of each crème-smooth balm will allow the lips to feel hydrated with a wash of sheer, delicious colour that will take you from day to night.

A handy tip is to coat your lips with Lip Nourish at night to awake with a soft, nourished lips by morning.

luk lip nourish 8 nude and neutral shades

5. Eat for beauty

You can make a big difference to your skin by making some small changes to your diet when the new season arrives. In particular, consuming clean, fresh food will give you the best beauty benefits.

Sweet potatoes, pumpkins, beetroot, apples, and pumpkin seeds are all in season during Autumn, and contain Vitamins A and C not to mention a plethora of healthy nutrients and antioxidants to reduce inflammation, slow down the ageing process and aid in the creation of new skin cells.

Don’t forget the fatty acids. Research shows people deficient in essential fatty acids often have dry lips and skin. So, it makes sense to boost your EFA intake in Autumn. Nuts, seeds, avocados and oily fish can help resolve parched skin, and embracing lipsticks containing EFA-rich avocado (Vitamin E), walnut and flaxseed oils (linoleic acid) have been scientifically proven to heal and hydrate.

If you’re not already taking an organic natural food booster, Autumn is a great time to begin. These not only gives your immune system a much needed pre-winter boost, but also works wonders to hydrate, smooth and protect your skin.
