CEO & Founder of Lük Beautifood

Food scientist and chef Cindy Luken is the heart and soul of Lük Beautifood. With a Bachelor of Applied Science (Food and Nutrition), as well as an Honorary Masters of Science from The University of Newcastle, Cindy is an expert in the nutrient-active ingredients that underpin every product Luk Beautifood creates.

After selling her company, Luken & May biscuits, to the Byron Bay Cookie Company in 2003 Cindy took time off to raise her family and did some work for a friend’s beauty business where she became concerned about the toxins in skincare. She learned that the average woman applies 515 chemicals to her skin each day and consumes around 2 kilograms of lipstick in a lifetime. “Everyone was eating for health, but no one was paying attention to the fact that what goes on our skin is absorbed into our bodies,” she says. “I quickly realised there was no point eating well if you still painted your face with a noxious cocktail of synthetic dyes, chemical preservatives and petroleum (ahem, plastic) ingredients. Evidence was starting to show that these things were endocrine disruptors, carcinogens and that they caused allergies and skin disorders.”

Armed with this new information, Cindy set up a test kitchen in her home and started formulating all-natural, healthy makeup. “It was a no-brainer that lip products could be made from food instead of synthetics,” she says. “My goal was to create simple, beautiful products that would feed skin from the outside in.” Add some eco-friendly wraps and Lük Beautifood was born.

“To be naturally beautiful I believe it’s essential to take a holistic, lifestyle approach - makeup is just the icing on the cake.” Cindy Luken
