3 Day Beauty Cleanse – Day 1 Cleansing Foods

This post has been updated for 2018

The new year has begun, so now is the perfect time to get those energy levels up and achieve that inner glow (which as we know, translates into an ‘outer’ glow!).  With my ‘3 ways for 3 days beauty cleanse’, I’ll help you reveal your natural beauty and break those bad habits that may have crept in with your busy lifestyle. So, what are you waiting for let’s get started on your CLEANSE, NOURISH & GLOW recipe.

Day 1 | EAT CLEAN, LEAN & GREEN

See what our top beauty cleanse foods are and follow our simple menu with nourishing recipes. Be guided by our 10 ‘eat clean’ principles.

Day 2 | TOSS THE TOXINS

Learn what you expose your body to via your daily skin and body care routine– from soap and shampoo, to lipstick and perfume. Cleanse your body from the outside in.

Day 3 | DE-STRESS – Take time to move, be mindful and find balance with self-nurturing rituals.

DAY 1 Eat clean, lean & green

What is a beauty cleanse?

Think of it as a car service with a wash and wax throw in – maintenance you need to do to keep your car running smoothly and looking good! A beauty cleanse can bring you back on track and help reenergise your system by eliminating toxins for optimum health and beauty wellbeing. The foods you eat are low allergy (e.g. non-dairy and gluten-free), anti-inflammatory, alkalising (lots of greens, citrus, whole seeds and nuts) and high in antioxidants.

The Lük Beautifood philosophy is to ‘eat clean’ – nourishing wholefoods that are minimally processed to retain their intrinsic nutrients. We’re all busy women here, so we’ve adopted a realistic approach to eating that means the wheels won’t fall off when you prepare food for your family. We offer a healthy way of living that not only enhances your natural beauty, but one that also works for those you love.

When you have finished our 3 day cleanse, you can easily continue to prepare and whip up all those beautiful foods and recipes you have tried. Experiencing bloating? Is the skin looking lacklustre or feeling dry? Get yourself back on track with a mini beauty detox by simply doing juices, smoothies or salads for a day. It’s enough to do you a world of good! I like to cleanse every six months – post-summer holidays and pre-spring.

Day 1: Cleansing your body from the inside out is our main focus. Look at what you are eating and eliminate some toxic and heavy going foods for 3 days. From the way you look to how you feel, you’ll be amazed with the results. Our beauty cleanse can do more than make your eyes sparkle and your skin glow – it can boost energy levels, improve digestion and if you extend for a week, it can also help shift a few unwanted kilos too.

What to eat & eliminate

Permanently eliminate these toxic foods from your diet such as:

  • Processed foods
  • Refined sugars
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Trans fats

During the 3 day cleanse also eliminate these foods:

  • Gluten
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Dairy
  • Meat
  • Chicken

By choosing to eat the beauty foods that will cleanse your skin from the inside out, you will see improvement in everything from digestion and the adsorption and facilitation of essential beauty nutrients. These help to fight everything from wrinkles and dry skin, to dull eyes and low energy.

Have a look at my favourite beauty cleansing foods and be sure to include these on your plate daily!

Triple A Foods

Alkalising, Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant

In the world of beauty, these are what I call Triple A foods. Foods that feed your beauty because they contain nutrients or are composed in such away they have a positive ‘beautifying’ effect on your skin, hormones or vitality.

Alkalising foods: An alkaline diet is plant based with less or no cow dairy, high-fat meats, alcohol and processed foods including sugary drinks and snacks. Over time, these acid-forming foods are said to accumulate in your body causing disease and adverse skin related reactions.

Anti-inflammatory:  Some foods can create an inflammatory response, which means an increased immune reaction. When talking about this skin, this can include anything from redness and puffiness as the body tries to defend itself. Dairy, for example, causes inflammation in a large percentage of the population, resulting in skin sensitivities and poor digestion, which causes dry, rough and dull skin.

Antioxidants: Antioxidants fight free radicals; those pesky little unattached oxygen cells that can ‘rust’ your insides. Vitamins such as A, C and E, and powerful minerals like selenium and phytonutrients – carotene, lutein, lycopene, for example, protect your skin by guarding your cells from damage.

Be mindful in your eating and seek out Triple A foods.

Sample Meal Plan

On waking: Glass of warm filtered water with juice of ½ a lemon.

Breakfast: Small bowl quinoa porridge, berries, sprinkle of chia seeds – use almond or walnut milk.

Morning snackGlow & go green smoothie (or if you’re like me, you can choose to have it with breakfast and skip the snack)

Lunch: Left over quinoa, with half an avocado or tin of tuna/mackerel plus mixed salad with herbs, drizzle olive or avocado oil, sprinkle of apple cider vinegar.

Afternoon snack: Sliced red capsicum, cucumber or celery and carrot stick with hummus.

Dinner: Small piece salmon with stir fried veg with a sesame seed / seaweed sprinkle.

To drink: Sip water with lemon or a natural herbal tea that includes liquorice.

What to eat after DAY 3 of your beauty cleanse

After your cleanse, you may reintroduce caffeine, alcohol, dairy, meat, chicken and gluten, though try to avoid a wheat-heavy diet (as nutritionist Michele Chevally describes it ‘Frankinstein Food’). Oats, barley and rye are fine in moderation.

If you are purist and don’t eat these ‘acidic’ foods described above, that’s fabulous, but if like me you have kids, entertain and eat out (and LOVE ALL good food), it’s all about moderation! Minimise how many times you eat meat and how many coffees or glasses of wine you drink every week, for example. Just mix it up! Keep trying new foods and combinations to find what works best for you and your lifestyle.

Going forward…

Wheat: if you love a good sourdough loaf or pasta, eat wheat only a couple time a weeks, rather than at every meal. Remember that most of these are wheat-based: crackers, cereal, bars, biscuits, cakes, pasta and bread.

Alcohol: try to drink only on the weekends or special occasions only.

Dairy: it’s fine to have some cheese (French women eat cheese, after all!) or milk in your tea, but think what other types of non-dairy milks you could use with your granola or smoothie. Try our recipe for a delicious easy-to-make almond milk as an alternative!

Clean eating is just that – it’s about eliminating or reducing the toxins your body is exposed to through the foods you eat and apply to your body.

From the paddock to plate clean food is kept just that – clean, whole and unprocessed. It’s a back-to-basics approach so that:

  • goodness is not stripped out via processing
  • additives arn’t added to preserve, colour, texturise, flavour, enhance…..(yes those numbers on an ingredient statement)
  • everyday foods don’t become an unhealthy, high energy mix of ingredients that add KJ’s without nutrients – think biscuits made from refined sugar, refined white flour and trans fats.

Why We Love Clean Eating

  1. makes you glow and go
  2. eliminated toxins from your body
  3. you benefit from the intrinsic goodness in the whole foods
  4. minimises processing, reduces wastage, better for the environment
  5. not dieting but keeps you trim and toned

Healthy Eating Christmas

By eating clean nothing can be added that ‘dirties’ your beautiful body and affects how it works.  Chemicals that build up in your body can be seen and felt everywhere: from inflammation causing red, sagging and puffy skin to free radicals attacking your skin cells and causing premature ageing. From a health perspective think high blood pressure, inflamed liver, auto-immune disease, weight gain, mood swings……

So clean food is about nourishing your beautiful body with delicious, nutritious wholesome foods. Think grass fed meats, complex carbs like grains, fruit, vegetables, salad, nuts and seeds and healthy fats. Think filtered water, DIY juices and organics.

We have plenty of clean eating recipes and tips and tricks in our beauty kitchen to help you eat clean. Visit our superfood tab and discover the beauty in clean foods with our beautifood bites that detail what’s in a food and what it does for your beauty wellbeing. Or need to know about cold pressed juices or how to make a green smoothie and don’t know where to start? luk beautifood has ALL the answers.

Clean eating is the foundation of natural beauty.

10 Principles of Clean Eating

1.  Don’t eat processed food containing preservatives, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, colours, flavours, modifiers, enhancers or trans fats.

2.  Eat more veggies than meat

3.  Eat more raw than cooked

4.  Eat organic when possible

5.  Incorporate probiotic foods into your everyday diet

6.  Eat nuts, seeds and non-wheat grains (prepared properly)

7.  Reduce dairy intake and experiment with nut milks

8.  Reduce your caffeine intake to a maximum of 2 caffeinated drinks per day

9.  Limit alcohol to the weekend or special occasions

10. Sip water with a squeeze of lemon or lime

And finally, do NOT stress over what you can and can’t eat, it is just as bad for you as having that extra glass of wine or handful of chips! Do what you can and take each day one step at a time. It’s all a journey!

This gorgeous ruby and aromatically spiced tea made with fresh cranberries and citrus is perfect for Spring. It’s not only cheerful and cooling, it’s caffeine-free too – so all kids, and kids at heart, can join in the fun.

A much-loved staple for Thanksgiving in the Northern Hemisphere, I’ve re-imaged the recipe as the perfect tonic and delicious iced tea in the our warmer months.

BEAUTY BOOST

BEAUTY BITE

A year round superfood, cranberries contain a high nutrient and antioxidant content and are an  excellent source of vitamin C, fibre, vitamin E, vitamin K and manganese.
Cranberry also boast an impressive array of phytonutrients which are naturally occurring plant chemicals that offer the anti-inflammatory properties and protection from harmful free radicals.

Did you know: Sailors would carry cranberries on their ships to avoid scurvy due to the high vitamin C content and ease of storage when dried.

5 Top Natural Beauty Tips for Autumn

Top 5 Natural Beauty Tips for Autumn

The temperatures become cooler, the days are shorter, the morning air is crisp and it’s time to start thinking about woolly jumpers and hats. Autumn is officially here, bringing with it a harvest of yummy foods and exciting Autumn beauty trends. But after months of sun, sand and sea exposure, Autumn also summons the need for some serious TLC.

Our 5 top Autumn beauty skin, hair and health tips will keep you in glowing condition top to toe through the change in seasons with a range of post-summer beauty rituals, natural foods and remedies to prepare your skin from the inside out and outside in.

1. Exfoliate often!

Autumn is the perfect time to focus on repairing and caring for your skin and health, especially if you’ve spent time at the beach in previous months. To save your skin from becoming dull, lacklustre and dehydrated during the colder months, up your exfoliation to twice a week. The exfoliation process increases cell turnover rate and promotes more radiant skin by removing dead skin cells that can prevent the absorption of any moisturisers or serums.

For the body, we recommend Dry Body Brushing regularly, which works to invigorate your lymphatic system and rid the skin of lumps and bumps. By starting to ‘dry brush’ you’ll not only exfoliate and boost your circulation and refine your skin tone, but also create more energy in the body and a feeling of general wellbeing. Check out this handy tutorial on how to dry body brush the skin.

When it comes to the face, try one of our favourite at-home pantry beauty recipes – Honey & Oats Deep Cleansing Mask, which is extremely cleansing, healing and softening to the skin, not to mention smells and tastes delicious! You’ll have a youthful glow this season in no time.

2. Swap coffee and sugary drinks for herbal tea

As tricky as it is to give up your morning coffee, herbal tea will do all kinds of wonder this Autumn, especially when it comes to your skin. Caffeine in coffee and some caffeine rich teas dehydrates the skin, which can ultimately leads to ageing and a dull skin tone.

Similarly, the high level of sugar in drinks like hot chocolate and lemonade can also be damaging to your skin, causing blemishes and break outs. In older women, sugar consumption can lead to the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), proteins that become glycated causing skin ageing, wrinkles and lines, so avoid as best as possible.

For the perfect substitute try this warming Chai Tea recipe, which is packed with antioxidants including vitamin C, vitamin A, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron and theobromine, the kinds of chai spices that prevent free radical damage that can lead to premature ageing. There isn’t anything better than a warm cup of herbal tea to ward away cold weather blues, don’t you think?

Chai

3. Increase hydration

As the season changes and the temperature plummets, it’s important to keep hydration at the top of your skincare regime. The skin repairs itself at night, and during this process, loses a huge proportion of its moisture. Throw heating into the mix, and we have ourselves a recipe for extreme dehydration.

Aim to use skin-loving nutrient rich hydrating balms that encourage and contain vital ingredients like Vitamin C, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. You might also want to layer your balms with serums to supercharge the thirst-quenching benefits or pop on an overnight mask for radiant skin by morning.

If your complexion has lost its glow, try this DIY Banana and Avocado Face Mask to nourish, plump and boost radiance or if you’ve experienced sun damage from a long, hot summer, then give this DIY Mask for Summer Spots a whirl.

Always opt for products that do not contain pore blocking ingredients such as mineral oil, drying alcohol, fragrance and preservatives that prevent your skin from breathing naturally.

And don’t forget your hands – as the skin on your hands doesn’t produce as much natural oil as the rest of your body, it’s much more prone to dryness, especially in colder weather. Pamper your hands with a deeply hydrating rescue remedy enriched with natural ingredients like Jojoba oil and soothing Marshmallow root.

Likewise, sun and sea can leave hair dry and damaged. Use the cooler months to nurture it back to health with powerhouse ingredients like coconut oil and argan oil for gorgeous, softer-than-ever tresses that remain hydrated and healthy.

4. Use natural lip care

It’s no secret that the chill in the air can be taxing on the lips, drying them out and leaving them a little worse for wear. Luckily, there’s a few key ways to keep them in tip top shape this season.

Firstly, the number one rule for keeping lips luscious is to not lick them to moisten them. Saliva is full of enzymes designed to aid digestion, not hydrate lips, so stay mindful to avoid lip licking.

Next, minimise the amount of salty and spicy foods you’re consuming which can trigger inflammation.

Thirdly, avoid products containing synthetic flavours and fragrances. Although it’s tempting to reach for a tub of petroleum jelly to protect chapped lips from the chill, it’s not as helpful as you think. As a by-product from the oil industry, petroleum jelly is not compatible with our skin and applying on your lips is like wrapping your skin in cling film, preventing it from breathing and potentially making the area even more sore and chapped.

Give your lips an even better edge against the elements with a super hydrating and nourishing lip balm like our Lip Nourish, which is made with avocado and citrus oils and natural emollients to keep your lips soft, smooth, hydrated and protected. For everyday wear, try Nude Cinnamon or Chai Shimmer, or even our best-selling Rose Lime. The unique melting texture of each crème-smooth balm will allow the lips to feel hydrated with a wash of sheer, delicious colour that will take you from day to night.

A handy tip is to coat your lips with Lip Nourish at night to awake with a soft, nourished lips by morning.

luk lip nourish 8 nude and neutral shades

5. Eat for beauty

You can make a big difference to your skin by making some small changes to your diet when the new season arrives. In particular, consuming clean, fresh food will give you the best beauty benefits.

Sweet potatoes, pumpkins, beetroot, apples, and pumpkin seeds are all in season during Autumn, and contain Vitamins A and C not to mention a plethora of healthy nutrients and antioxidants to reduce inflammation, slow down the ageing process and aid in the creation of new skin cells.

Don’t forget the fatty acids. Research shows people deficient in essential fatty acids often have dry lips and skin. So, it makes sense to boost your EFA intake in Autumn. Nuts, seeds, avocados and oily fish can help resolve parched skin, and embracing lipsticks containing EFA-rich avocado (Vitamin E), walnut and flaxseed oils (linoleic acid) have been scientifically proven to heal and hydrate.

If you’re not already taking an organic natural food booster, Autumn is a great time to begin. These not only gives your immune system a much needed pre-winter boost, but also works wonders to hydrate, smooth and protect your skin.

10 DIY Beauty Recipes

8 ways to detox

8 Easy Ways to Detox Your Body

Detox your body the natural way with these 8 easy steps that will have you glowing from the inside out.

1. Juice cleanse

Did you know that for most people, it takes almost 18 hours for your body to digest and eliminate one meal?! Give your body a break and naturally flush out toxins whilst also keeping your body energised and satisfied a 3 day pressed juice cleanse to feel lighter, brighter and GLOW today.

2. Sleep more

Sleep is when your body rebuilds and regenerates itself. Without adequate sleep, your immune system is compromised, it’s easier to gain weight and you lack energy.  Not getting the rest you need and taking care of yourself doesn’t allow your body to function optimally, which includes its ability to naturally cleanse itself.

3. Take a tech-tox

Did you know that Harvard Medical School scientists found that being on your laptop or mobile before bed can actually disrupt the body’s production of melatonin ? This  in turn negatively effects our quality of sleep. Try a technology detox to improve your sleep patterns and be more present in your day-to-day life. Start by turning off your phone and TV every night after 8pm and not turning it on until after your morning routine.

4. Sweat it out

We all know that regular exercise is essential to maintain a healthy body but it is also an effective way of naturally cleansing the body through sweating.  Not only that, it also aids with blood circulation and digestion.

5. Drink up!

Increase your intake of detoxifying, antioxidant rich drinks like lemon water, green tea and green juices to hydrate, nourish and protect the body whilst promoting its natural detoxification methods.

6. Eat more fibre

Fibre is an essential nutrient for the digestive system to function properly.  Not eating enough fibre can result in bloating and sluggishness. When your digestive tract is working properly, toxins, waste, and anything else that has built up in within the tract will move through quickly helping you to feel lighter and more energised.

7. Reduce sugar

By reducing refined sugar in your diet, you’ll not only naturally improve your physical appearance (think glowing skin and unwanted weight) but you’ll also have improved  immune system, brain function and serotonin levels (happy hormones).

8. Clean out your makeup bag

We cannot stress how important this is! It is well known that your skin is your largest organ and it is said that “60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed into the body” so it only makes sense that you nourish your skin the same way you do with your body with toxin free, natural makeup and skin care. Not only is this better for your health and the environment, but an Australian report published in the International Journal of Chemistry proved that natural products are better for your skin!

We’re all busy women here, so we’ve adopted a realistic approach to eating that means the wheels won’t fall off when you prepare food for your family.

How to get glowing skin – the fast and easy way

I’m of the belief that we all deserve deliciously glowing skin that exudes pure vitality and radiance, but achieving complexion nirvana is not always an easy feat. Thankfully all you need is a bit of a boost, some healthy balance and the right nourishing practices to master a flawless canvas and heal your skin from the inside out.

Below, I’ve thrown together all of my best tips and tricks to help you supercharge your skin to optimum health and keep it glowy and gorg, without the need for pricey facials or dermal fillers. These quick steps are easy to squeeze into your daily routine and require minimal effort (amen). Read on natural beauties!

1. Always, ALWAYS wash your face at night – even if you’ve worn no makeup.

Over the course of the day, makeup, dirt, and oil build up on your face. Make cleansing your skin with an all-natural, nourishing formula part of your bedtime routine so you can clean and prep your canvas for lotions and potions that go on top. You might also want to apply a toner (free of alcohol, astringents and fragrances) which removes any product residue and will also help close your pores. Make your own healthy DIY concoction with 2 Tbs. of Apple Cider Vinegar and 4 Tbs. of distilled water. Combine in a bottle and shake well before each use. Apply using a cotton ball, being careful around the delicate eye area. Voila! Easy.

3. Smooth on some moisturiser and serum.

Moisturising your face morning and night with either either a lotion or serum (or both!) helps your skin repair itself and wards off wrinkles. Reach for natural, organic formulas that contain fortifying vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants that feed your skin at a cellular level and are free of any chemical baddies that could potentially strip the skin and absorb into the pores. Don’t forget your neck and décolletage! These areas can get super dry and irritated not to mention wrinkly if you never moisturise them. For best results, apply to freshly washed skin to lock in hydration.

4. Get your sleep.

It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Sleep deprivation lowers circulation and can make your skin look lacklustre and dull. Amp up your body’s cellular renewal system by getting a minimum of 8 hours per night (7, if you’re super time poor, should do the trick!).

5. Snack on nuts.

Healthy foods like Brazil Nuts and Walnuts are rich in selenium and omega-3 fatty acids to lower inflammation and put the brakes on breakouts. Macadamias are similarly full of high quality oils and fatty acids that aid in skin repair and rejuvenation, so don’t be afraid to keep a handful somewhere close by for when it’s snack time.

6. Keep hydrated.

Water helps clear the toxins that cause inflammation and blemishes, and is fab at transporting nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells which helps deliver elasticity, softness and smoothness. Aim for 2 litres per day, and if you struggle with this, set a reminder on your phone to drink every hour. You might also want to squeeze a bit of citrus in with your h20 which is a great little skin detoxifier. For a bit of flavour, try sipping on skin-soothing teas like chamomile or mint.

6. Exfoliate once a week.
If your skin tends to be dry and flaky, a weekly exfoliation can clear out dead skin cells. That’s because your complexion looks radiant when it’s smooth enough to reflect light. Find a natural exfoliant that has super fine grains, and use light pressure and gentle motions. To make your own, combine  yoghurt, organic coconut oil and natural oats. Scrub on your face in a circular motion, let sit for 15-30 minutes, rinse, wash as usual. You’ll be luminous in no time!
7. Clean your makeup brushes and your pillow cases.
Our makeup brushes and pillows tend to collect dirt and bacteria which can cause breakouts so make sure you’re giving your brushes and bed linen a good wash at least once per week.

9. Have a healthy, balanced diet.

A diet high in fats and carbohydrates can actually cause more wrinkles.  To keep your cells revved up and rejuvenated, stick to plenty of fresh fruit and veg, lean protein like fish, white meat poultry, tofu, beans and lentils etc. Here’s a list of more skin foods and their awesome nutritional benefits.

10. Enhance your glow with makeup.

One you’ve gone a healthy skincare routine downpat, what better way to add that little bit of pizzazz to your beautiful features than with skin-enhancing makeup that won’t clog your pores. If your skin is normal or dry, apply 100% Pure’s Tinted Moisturiser Creme which is jam-packed with antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetable pigments instead of synthetic dyes and features a hydrating formula to even out skin tone and gently blur imperfections. Using your fingertips, tap up and down your cheekbones, and dab whatever is left over on your brow bones, the center of your chin, and the tip of your nose. If your complexion is oily, dust a powder formula over the same areas with a small fluffy brush using 100% Pure Flawless Skin Powder Foundation. For a healthy, fresh-faced flush, dab the 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Pot Rouge into the cheekbones until fully blended. You’ll appear lit-from-within in no time!

De-stress

3 Day Beauty Cleanse – Day 3 De-Stress

It’s the final day of our 3 Day Beauty Cleanse that will have your eyes sparkling, skin glowing and a fabulous feeling of vitality and peacefulness embrace you.

On Day 1 we cleansed our skin from the INSIDE OUT with nourishing, energising foods and Day 2 we swapped to cleaning up our skin from the OUTSIDE IN with the products you apply to your body.

Today we look at the importance of taking time and making it a priority to destress and relax by nourishing your body and soul. We introduce some healthy habits that will have you glowing from the inside out.

DAY 3 stress

Let’s look at your busy lifestyle and see if there are certain routines we can add to make sure you are not compromising your body due to stress.  It is important to take ‘me time’ to look after not just your body but your mind and soul too.

When you’re overly stressed, your body takes a ‘fight or flight’ response which dumps the hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin into your blood stream. These stress hormones have far reaching effects from adding fat around your abdomen and major organs to detrimental responses in your body including inflammation.

In the eyes of beauty, stress shows as:

1. Lines & Wrinkles

When cortisol is released by the body, sugar levels in your blood increase. We know that sugar spikes are especially bad for diabetics, but increased blood sugar via stress also promotes this process called glycation in our skin. Glycation damages our skin’s collagen  which increases lines and wrinkles.  This process is known as AGEs.  Advanced glycation end products (or, appropriately, AGEs for short).

2. Dry Flaky Skin

Cortisol also affects our skin’s ability to produce hyaluronic acid which acts as a natural moisturiser.   Even more, cortisol affects the skin’s barrier allowing moisture to evaporate.  And when skin is dehydrated, the enzymes in our skin that repair daily damage don’t work as well creating a vicious cycle.

3. Poor Complexion

When our bodies are in the ‘fight or flight’ mode adrenaline may help us to charge or run away fast  but it does little for our skin. In fact  if adrenalin is present, blood flow to the skin is decreased, which robs it of vital nutrients such as iron and oxygen. Less oxygen and sluggish circulation leads to a dull, sallow or grey complexion.  Good circulation is essential for a healthy radiant glow.

4. Cellulite

When blood flow is decreased (& that comes from lack of exercise and too much sitting), toxins begin to build up in the skin as well. Toxins as we know strip you of a glowing complexion, and research shows toxins can play a role in cellulite development…which we all know what that looks like.

Beautiful ways detox your mind, body & soul

Although stress is unavoidable (and let’s admit it, many of us work better when under the thumb!), there are better ways to manage it. Here are some areas to concentrate on that also provide health benefits.

Relaxation

It sounds obvious, but you must make a concerted effort to slow down and relax. Long soaking baths, deep breathing, meditating, and other forms of “quiet time” will help.

Physical Activity

Not only does exercise clear the mind it and blow off steam, physical activity boosts circulation which gets you glowing and wards of cellulite and boosts your metabolism to burn more energy and keep you lean. Exercise can also take the shape of yoga which includes slow breathing and inward focus.

Beauty Sleep

Yes – it is true what they say! Adequate sleep will keep cortisol to a minimum and fight off lines, wrinkles, and dry skin.

For a deeper, longer sleep. Try these tips:

  • avoid eating and drinking alcohol or caffeine late at night
  • establish a nightly routine that allows you to wind down before bedtime
  • avoid screen time for at least half an hour before snoozing
  • don’t take your phone to bed with you
  • ensure you room is relatively dark so you don’t affect  your body’s sleep cycle
  • try to wake to the natural light coming in

SLIDESHOW - 5 WAYS TO DE-STRESS YOUR BODY

#1 Dry Body Brushing

Dry body bushing

Dry Body Brushing works to invigorate your lymphatic system. By starting to ‘dry brush’ you will exfoliate and boost your circulation and skin tone, create more energy and create a feeling of general wellbeing.

Skin is our largest organ, it’s estimated a third of your body’s daily impurities are excreted through it. If your skin becomes sedentary, its ability to remove excess toxins is impaired.

Dry body brushing helps to open the pores to release stored toxins, softens deposits of hard fat below the skin and prepares them for removal. The scrubbing motion activates the lymphatic system, especially when focusing on the underarms and groin. Other benefits include promoting circulation, aiding digestion, reducing muscle tension and stress.

You can brush anywhere from two to twenty minutes. Do this as a morning invigoration or a relaxing nightly ritual, and make this impactful, easy and inexpensive beauty routine a part of your daily life. Body love for glowing results.

#2 Relaxing Bath Soak

Relaxing Bath time

Relaxing Detox Bath Soak: A dreamy bath with mineral salts help draw toxins from the skin whilst allowing your mind to relax with pure essential oils. Wishing this was you bathroom…me too! Image source Pinterest

Epsom salts (pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulphate) are an effective way of removing toxins and heavy metals from your body.

Your skin is a highly porous membrane and adding the right minerals to your bathwater triggers a process called reverse osmosis, which actually pulls salt out of your body, along with the harmful toxins. Osmosis also works to replenish your body of vital nutrients and minerals. One in particular, magnesium, eases stress and relaxes the body by helping to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain, and decreasing levels of adrenaline. It also is known to relieve inflammation, ease pain, improving blood circulation.

It’s as simple as adding two cups of salt to a warm bath and soaking for at least 12 minutes. Whether you like a calming soak or wish to detox effortlessly, an salt bath is a beautiful addition to your beauty routine. Light some candles, add a couple drops of your favourite essential oil and enjoy!

#3 Rise & Shine. Exercise Outdoors

photo (16)

Switch your routine to rising early to enjoy the beauty benefits of exercising outdoor.

Rise & Shine: Get up with the sun and take an invigorating walk outside in the park or bush where the fresh oxygen is.

Use hand weights to increase the load, find a natural oasis – stop, stretch, be mindful of the simple, natural beauty that surrounds you.

Use this peaceful time to review how you feel and to organise your thoughts.

You won’t know how good this feels or looks til you embrace it….skin that is slightly flushed with blood and full of oxygen creates rosier glowing skin – a sign of natural beauty!

#4 Moisturising Shower Oil

Shower outdoors This is your daily standing spa treatment you can never miss. Make your own in-shower moisturising oil by combining your favourite plant oil (eg olive, coconut or flaxseed) with a few drops of essentials oils and pop it in a plastic container and keep in the shower. Whilst under the shower pop some in your hand, rub together, inhale then smooth over your wet body. The steam opens your pores and the oil soaks into your skin, trapping moisture and leaving your skin cleansed and baby soft. Not mention creating an uplifting aromatherapy session every day!

Using natural, pure oils as a body wash and moisturiser is an amazing way to get your body feeling silky soft without the fillers, emulsifiers and other nasties that can be found in soaps and cleansers that strip your skin of natural oils causing it to dry out. And since you only need a smidgen and it comes from your pantry it is an economical and effective way to have beautiful skin.

I have been doing this for 15 years, you do not feel greasy after this daily ritual nor does your towel become dank.

#5 Create a Serene Space at Home

Relax

Simple, organic objects create a feeling of calm. It’s important to take a little time to look inwards and gather some goodness.

Your home or at least several rooms should be considered a refuge from the outside world where new technology, frenetic schedules and the cult of consumerism can leave you feeling anxious and unfilled.

To regain a sense of spirituality, use simple natural aesthetics such as pebbles, sand and stones as home decor, to help calm your senses, inspire creativity and induce clarity of thought.

Have your own personal quiet space inside or out where you can find peace and reconnect with your spiritual self, for about 15 minutes a day. The start or end of the day is best.

3 Simple Ways to Cleanse your Mind, Body & Soul

Feeling a little bit overwhelmed with the kids/work/family, and need to have just a little ‘me’ break? We know you have the best intentions, but sometimes it seems that between being a mother, adhering to social and work commitments and with the stresses of everyday life, it can be tricky to maintain free time for ourselves.

To a lot of us, the idea of living well and spending time working on ourselves seems too hard, almost impossible. We are always at the bottom of the ‘to-do list’ or feel too guilty to take time out. Looking after yourself does require mind over matter and organisation, but once it becomes a savoured ritual, you’ll never look back – the results are just too good: Peace. Clarity. Energy = Happiness!

Here are three simple ways I like to cleanse and centre my body and soul to feel a sense of calm and to reenergise:

1. Style Your Space – Create a serene place for living.

Your home or at least several rooms should be considered a refuge from the outside world where new technology, frenetic schedules and the cult of consumerism can leave you feeling anxious and unfilled.

  • To regain a sense of spirituality, use simple natural aesthetics such as pebbles, sand and stones as home decor, to help calm your senses, inspire creativity and induce clarity of thought.
  • Have your own personal quiet space where you can find peace and reconnect with your spiritual self, for about 15 minutes a day.
  • Arrange a cluster of small everyday items, such as candles or old jam jars with fresh herbs from your kitchen garden to create a harmonious energy, as their impact is wrought by their intrinsic beauty of ‘found’ objects, rather than a contrived artificial display. Often it is the personal association – a piece of driftwood picked up from a windswept beach on holiday – that has a significance that goes beyond the material value.
  • Candles and natural light are essential in the creation of a peaceful living environment. A soulful experience has a strong dependence on the purity of light to generate energy, amplify space and nurture the soul.
  • Opt for creamy, pale, neutral shades of fabric to turn your sanctuary into a place of softness and warmth. Pale shades reflect natural light making your space seem bigger and brighter – the ultimate in spiritual chic.
  • Or step outside and create a small lush green and/or fragrant place where you can pop a chair or sit on an up turned log. In the evening add a citronella candle and rest peacefully. It’s also a lovely time of day to water your garden or taking a herbal tea.

2. Immerse your body in rituals.

  • Showers are your standing spa appointments. They are that special time you can rely on daily to be alone in your thoughts and can place attention to yourself. Treat shower time in the morning as the threshold of your day, and step out invigorated and ready for exciting challenges ahead. At night, use it to unwind and drift fresh and peaceful between the sheets for extra sweet dreams. (& lock your door if you have kids!)
  • Baths are a deeper form of devotion to you. As much as they are about treating your body and enjoying some time alone, they can also be blissfully comforting and weightless, allowing you to be enveloped in warmth, with feelings of stress evaporating quickly.
  • Pamper your hands. As we age, the skin on the back of our hands wrinkles and loses elasticity, just as the face does. Pamper your hardworking hands with salt sand and vitamin rich nut oils to make your hands silky soft. Keep your fingernails and cuticles healthy, and pamper yourself with an overnight hand treatment.
  • Your feet need to be nurtured as they carry the weight of your body and mind. Cold and hot foot baths stimulate circulation, while hot stone therapy (soothing stones) help stimulate your senses and reconnects you back to the earth. Have foot massages to stimulate and balance the body’s vital organs.

3. Nurture your soul.

  • Rediscover yourself with contemplation. Comforting yourself to be strong enough enables you to expand your loving kindness towards others. Use music and light to help you appreciate the moments, and to bring a sense of calm, inner peace and awareness.
  • Do Yoga or Meditate by taking it slow. Focus your attention on something in the present moment and improve your mental clarity and peace of mind.

These three simple rituals are food for your soul.

Enjoy!

How do you like to cleanse and re-centre yourself?

Monday Motivation: Cleanse for vitality

Happy Monday my natural beauties!

Here in the Southern Hemisphere we’re in the throes of Autumn with Winter right around the corner, and dare I say ‘flu season’ is upon us. When the weather gets colder, you can bet your bottom dollar the tissues start to make their return and the throaty coughs begin to emerge. But this year, we’re going to avoid that, aren’t we my loves?

Here are my tips on cleansing for vitality over the next few months to ensure you remain healthy and happy from the inside out and maintain your highest state of conscious living.

  1. Choose eco friendly chemical free household cleaning products or DIY simple products like baking soda and vinegar.
  2. Use pure essential oils, not perfumes, to fragrance your home.
  3. Make sure products aren’t tested on animals (more so for peace of mind than anything!).
  4. Grow your own herb and vegetable garden – a vertical wall if space is tight.
  5. Ditch plastic wraps and pre-packed products for a rubbish-free lunch box.
  6. Buy your food from farmer’s markets or a co-op to support local food growers.
  7. Eat fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables and ensure they’re nice and colourful to optimise your nutrient intake.
  8. Reuse, repurpose and recycle properly – chickens are a great way to get rid of food scraps, OR
  9. Set up a worm farm – the compost you make will be great for helping your garden grow!
  10. Remedy colds or flus the all-natural way – sip on ginger, honey and lemon tea and indulge in steamy showers, lots of water and plenty of sleep.
  11. Take advantage of the great outdoors to feel rejuvenated. Get back to nature. Even if it’s cold outside, throw on some gum boots and feel the crisp air against your skin!
  12. Eat the rainbow! Whip up healthy wholesome soups jam-packed with as many lentils, greens, grains and vegetables as possible.
  13. Dissolve stress and increase happiness in minutes by going for a bike ride or walk.
  14. Make a concerted effort to slow down and relax. Long soaking baths, deep breathing, meditating, and other forms of “quiet time” will help.
  15. Boost your energy levels and elevate your mood, while detoxifying your body with regular green juices.
  16. Maintain the balance of your skin flora by only using beauty products you’d eat. What goes on, goes in – don’t forget!

Watermelons are known for their vibrant green skin and lush pinky red flesh.  They grow on vines and are native to Africa, thriving in tropical locations.

FOOD ACTIVES:

Antioxidants such as beta carotene, lycopene, vitamin C and vitamin A, vitamin B6, thiamin, citrulline, copper, magnesium and potassium.

BEAUTY BENEFITS OF WATERMELON:

Watermelon is high in citrulline which is converted to the amino acid, arginine in your body.  Arginine soothes your muscles while increasing blood flow which is fabulous for promoting hair growth as it ensures a healthy scalp and encourages circulation of blood and nutrients. Watermelons are also alkaline foods which balance the acidity levels in your body.  They are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and lycopene all of which help to protect your skin and body from free radical damage, leaving your skin feeling fresh and revitalized.

COOK:

Watermelon has a high water content of 92% which makes it a great snack and helps to keep you hydrated. Watermelon rind and seeds can also be eaten, they’re high in iron and zinc, but compared to the flesh they don’t have a very appealing taste!

TIP:

Don’t forget to allow your watermelons ripen! The highest concentration of lycopene and beta carotene is found in a ripe watermelon, when it turns to a more redish colour.  A ripe watermelon is heavy, and slightly dulled when compared to it’s shiny unripe skin.
