Top Foods for Glowing, Healthy Skin

At Luk, we’re about educating people on the link between food and beauty. We want to show you how you can get glowing, healthy skin [sans make-up] simply from eating the right foods (or as we call them, beautyfoods!) to enhance your natural beauty.

When we talk about foods that “feed your beauty”, we’re talking about the Triple A’s: Alkalising, Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant rich foods. These foods contain key nutrients to feed your skin and to keep it healthy, clear, hydrated, and wrinkle-free because the health of your skin cells is directly influenced by what nutrients are available to them.

When your body lacks the right amount, or the right kinds of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and essential fatty acids, it shows; mainly through dull, irritated, uneven and prematurely aged skin. Although lifestyle and genetics play a large part in your skin’s health, you need to look after what you’re putting in your body to get the best out of it in terms of health, happiness, energy and beauty.

Read on to find out how you can eat yourself to glowing, beautiful and healthy skin through alkalising your body, eating anti-inflammatory foods and giving yourself a daily antioxidant boost.

Anti Oxidant Plum Cake

The Antioxidant Plum Cake

The traditional German recipe uses castor sugar. To reduce your body’s response to an insulin spike from the glucose I have substituted coconut sugar which has a GI of 35 compared to 68 in refined sugar and have replacing half the wheat flour with ground almonds rich in essential fatty acids and fibre. An insulin spike is like a burst of inflammation throughout your body.

Inflammation produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. Sugar is also known to go through the glycation process in your body where toxic compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE’s) are produced.  These too can cause wrinkles, dehydrated skin, dark circles under your eyes and accelerate the ageing process.

YOU’LL NEED…..

  • 10-12 large Queen Garnet Plums, cut in half and stone removed
  • 125g soft butter
  • ¾ cup coconut sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½  tspn baking powder
  • 1 cup almond meal
  • ¾ cup plain flour
  • 2 tblspn coconut sugar
  • 1 tspn cinnamon

TO MAKE….

Turn oven on 180C. Line the base of 26cm round spring form or lamington tin with baking paper.

  1. Cream butter with sugar til soft and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time with a tspn of flour, beat well after each addition.
  3. Add almond meal, flour and baking powder. Fold in til well combined.
  4. Spread over base of tin evenly.
  5. Arrange cut plums on surface of batter with cut side up.
  6. Combine the cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle over the top of cake.
  7. Bake for 45minutes. Check by making sure a skewer comes out clean when tested.

TIPS & TRICKS

– Best eaten the next day when the juices have softened the plums and the healthy fats in the almonds have released and moisturised the cake crumb.

Now it’s time to have your antioxidant cake and eat it too!

Skin Food Series: Chia seeds

Great looking skin and healthy insides starts with the food we eat, so each fortnight I’ll be bringing you a Skin Food Series blog post (a bit like our Beautifood Bites) which will profile all of the wondrous superfoods and healthy ingredients that contribute to a unstoppable glow on the inside out and outside in.

To  kick things off, today I’m talking about all things chia seeds! This splendid little superfood has been especially popular these past few years, peppering everything from juices to muesli to fish, and it’s no wonder why.

Chia contains the richest natural plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. On the protein front, they have approximately two times the protein of other grains, even more so than flaxseeds. And, unlike flax, they do not have to be ground to make their nutrients available to the body. They also provie calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc to the body and have the ability to restore vital moisture, diminish redness and inhibit wrinkles to the skin. Talk about being a total miracle food!

The tiny, tasteless seeds can be added to just about anything for a healthy boost.  Blend them in juice, grind them into a flour, or just sprinkle them into your yoghurt; you’ll get the same nutritional benefits than if you were to eat them alone. Amazing!

But wait… there’s more!
